Rules not Goals

 

Now that the new year is well and truly settled in, I am starting to realise how many (well, nearly all) of my resolutions have remained lofty ideas that sounded brilliant and achievable at the time but now that reality bites, have not seen the light of day.

 

So, I did what I often do. I started researching and looking around for some practical ideas to get 'stuff done'. Now, let me first give a word of warning: seeking ideas for how to be more productive is a somewhat risky excercise. If you think checking your Facebook is a black-hole of time wasting, try researching topics like 'How to get your house in order in 7 easy steps' or 'Ideas for getting on top of the laundry.' Before you know it an hour has passed and all you have to show for it is a list of ideas for renovating your house to make folding the clothes more enjoyable and achievable.

Reduce Decision Fatigue

I stumbled across the concept of decision fatigue whilst researching 'productivity' and it is one that really appeals to me. The premise is that in our lives we have so many pieces of information (big and small) that are competing for our attention. The amount of stimuli is infinite but, of course, our ability to attend and process it is limited. This is where stress and overwhelm come into play because simply we are overloaded with choice. There are many great resources around that deal with the tyranny of choice such as this TED talk by psychologist Barry Shwartz.

So, one strategy to eliminate stress and overwhelm is to reduce the number of 'things' you need to make decisions about. There are so many examples of incredibly creative and productive people who have reduced the decisions they need to make in different areas of their lives so they free up space for other activities that are more important to them. Personal Kanbans

A while ago I wrote about the Pomodoro method. I am always interested in, and looking for, ways to help streamline the many different projects I have going on with the aim to try and improve my productivity in the very small amount of time I get to work child-free. So, I have come across this: A Personal Kanban.

If you can get your head around the somewhat odd-sounding name, I am sure you will pick up some good advice in this summary that I have put together. It is essentially a way of looking at your to-do list. Now, this isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea simply because we all have different ways of working and different styles of learning. So, have a read and see if this might be the method that can help you to manage the many different tasks and jobs you have on an ever-growing to-do list.

Digital Detox

The problem with being a studying Mum means that you are often working from home and that means having to resist all the temptations that home offers. There are dishes to be done, washing to put out, meals to prepare, cups of tea to be drunk....

However, the biggest threat to productivity has to be social media. As those of you who have been following this blog know, I have a love-hate relationship with Facebook and technology in general. I can absolutely see the value in it - for example, the connections that have formed between Mums on the closed Facebook group, and the support they offer each other, has been just fantastic. The amount of time I have spent looking at ridiculous videos of men trying to dive into frozen swimming pools and the like has not been fantastic to say the least.
